Lymphatic Support: Diluted Essential Oils: lemongrass (less than .5% dilution ratio); Lemon; Cypress; Grapefruit; Helicrhysum OR Copaiba (Patch test any new oil!) Blend 3 in carrier oil (below) and apply 2-3 times daily for 2 weeks; then 2 times per week to lymphatic system Carrier: Sweet Almond or Jojoba Brushing: When brushing, always brush toward your heart, which is best for circulation and your lymphatic system. You can brush your entire body (including the soles of your feet). Start at your feet and work your way up your legs to your arms, chest, back, and stomach. Avoid brushing your face (unless you have a special brush designed for this delicate skin), your genitals, or any areas with irritations or abrasions (including varicose veins). The pressure you apply while brushing your skin should be firm but not painful (avoid "scrubbing"). Your skin should be pink after a session (not red or irritated) and you can brush for as long (or as little) as you'd like. An average dry brushing session may last between two and 20 minutes. Foot Baths: 2-3 times per week for 3 weeks; then once per week using clay and sea salts (warm and then cool) 20 min. max Drink: Approx. 64 ounces of purified water daily Josiah's Oils, 8 Meadow Lane, Lancaster, PA www.josiahsoils.com (717) 824-3222 Ninette Jackson C.C.A. Ninette Jackson, C.C.A. Josiah's Oils 8 Meadow Lane, Lancaster, PA (717) 824-3222 www.josiahsoils.com Some essential oils are considered phototoxic and can result in harm if applied topically to exposed areas within about 12-24 hours of sun exposure. Those we carry include Grapefruit, Bergamot, Lemon & Lime. NOT included are: Sweet Orange & Tangerine. However, don't despair, even the phototoxic oils can be used topically on sun exposed skin if diluted properly! For example a 2% dilution ratio for lemon should cause NO harm; same with a .6% or less of lime oil! Any questions, feel free to ask our Clinical Aromatherapist! Ninette Jackson C.A. It increases blood sugar, suppresses the immune system, and suppresses the digestive system. Importantly, it also suppresses the reproductive system. When we work and live in a continual state of high stress, this stress hormone can wreak havoc on our health. Resulting serious health issue include:
In a 2014 study, inhalation of clary sage oil reduced cortisol levels significantly while 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HTP) concentration was significantly increased. (study link below) So we know why we want reduced cortisol, but why do we want increased 5-HTP? Well, 5-HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid helping the body to produce serotonin and melatonin. Decreased serotonin has been been linked to mood disorders. Interestingly, it is thought that serotonin can affect mood, behavior, appetite and digestion, sleep, memory and sexual desire and function. Melatonin is known to help greatly with sleep. So the next time you are struggling with a stressful day, reach for a bottle of Clary Sage. An excellent way to enjoy the benefits is to diffuse. Doing so on a regular basis will reduce your risk of suffering the results of a stressful lifestyle - naturally. I wear mine in our Essential Oils Necklace when participating in a stressful event. "No natural remedy can really do all of that," is something I often hear. But in my experience, and in the evolving collection of scientific studies, essential oils really can do amazing things to help the human body. The reason is that plants, a gift from God, contain their own "life blood" - created to kill pathogens, carrier nutrients in, remove waste, release oxygen, heal injuries, and much more. The very low molecular weight of the "life blood" or essential oil (which is often between 136 and 240 amu) and molecular shape allow it to be trans-dermal, penetrating into the skin and into cells. The low atomic mass unit also allows the essential oils to pass the blood brain barrier allowing for immediate reaction is the brain which can release hormones and signals - which can produce relaxation and pain relief for example. Just as essential oils carry nutrients in the plant and remove waste from plant cells, they can also provide the same service to human cells. For example, plants practice chelation to remove metals from soil. Essential oils can help remove heavy metal accumulation in the body as well. Similarly, plants use scents to deter pests, which is why many essential oils provide us with that same benefit! It is key that unlike more modern medicine's focus on strictly synthetic drugs, essential oils work to balance systems. For example, many essential oils can work "smarter" than antibiotics (NOT to say antibiotics do not have a place in healing - God's design provides that wisdom as well!) in that they can target pathogens while preserving our body's good bacteria. (Always consult with your doctor on questions as to when prescription drugs are required as God has given us wisdom in medicine as well - remember balance is key; I am happy that many doctors today are looking to natural alternatives too.) Essential oils provide us a glimpse of the life of that first garden He created. :God saw everything He created. And it was very good..." Genesis 1:31 Ninette Jackson, C.C.A Sharon Cross, R.N. They can be used to lift your mood, suppress your appetite, help kill germs & odors, and much more. An simple basic recipe includes 5 ml of witch hazel, about 4 drops of essential oils (depending on the oils you choose), topped with distilled water (less chlorine than tap) in a 1 oz. misting bottle. (You can forgo the witch hazel if you do not have any - in that case you just need some extra shaking before using) Add a few drops of a light carrier oil if you will apply on the skin. Grapeseed Oil is a great choice. I love to use Lavender as a facial mist to kill bacteria and tighten pores. It also reduces redness. Drops of Grapefruit Oil suppresses appetite and lifts the mood when inhaled (just avoid putting Grapefruit on the skin if going into direct sunlight). Another option is a Congestion Blend for allergies and colds. Lots of fun can be had creating your own recipes - Like Tangy Tangerine with Lovey Lime. Use some tape to add a label so you recall what you used. Customizing names can be fun too; like Jill's Happy Mist; or Billy's Monster Spray for little nightmares. So many possibilities! As always, keep essential oils out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dark place. Please contact us with any questions! So how does stress harm you? First, stress releases adrenaline, which is considered a Fight or Flight hormone response - a protective survival response. But what happens when we are stressed over time - without periods of serious stress - free rest like our ancestors enjoyed? In that case stress results in serious mental and physical disorders. As we stated, when the body is under stress it releases adrenaline, which increases the heart rate, increases blood pressure, and causes quicker breathing. Cortisol (an adrenal hormone) is also released. This suppresses your immune system. Other hormones influence your health by increasing your blood sugar to sustain energy. The long term release of these hormones are known to cause weight gain fatigue, irritability, high blood pressure, head aches, anxiety, depression, and ultimately result in a stage of physical and mental exhaustion. There are many stress reducing tips on-line, so being an aromatherapist I am going to focus on essential oils. Essential oils can calm you down, strengthen your immune system, and balance your cortisol levels. They have the ability to penetrate cell membranes, travel throughout the body and enhance immunity. Lavender is a wonderful example of this as it works to support healthy adrenal function and reduce stressful responses by the body. It also helps the cells eliminate toxins. Essential oils are also extremely effective because when inhaled they have an immediate effect on the Limbic System – which is related to the part of the brain that controls heart rate, breathing, stress levels and hormone balance. Examples include, Clary Sage, Sweet Orange, Ylang Ylang and Bergamot. Finally, oils high in sesquiterpenes – like Frankincense - increase levels of oxygen in the brain and have a dramatic effect on emotions. One of the best ways to use essential oils to relax is to diffuse them, or inhale them throughout the day right from the bottle. A diluted roll-on can be made into a therapeutic "perfume" you can apply when under stress as well. Ninette Jackson, C.A. Josiahs Oils LLC www.JosiahsOils.com 8 Meadow Ln., Lancaster, PA 717.824.3222 To use essential oils topically, you need to dilute most in a carrier oil (such as grape seed, coconut, sunflower oils) to protect the skin. Unlike an essential oil, a carrier oil is a fatty - or fixed - oil. I love the term "carrier" because it illustrates what the fatty oil does to the essential oil: it carries or envelops it - like a little package! It has been becoming increasingly popular to use essential oils without dilution (or neat); in most cases, with the exception of very few oils like lavender (l. angustifoila) or specific medical needs, this practice is not safe! For example, oregano oil can cause severe burns on the skin if applied neat.
So back to math: There are 30 ml in an ounce, so our 10 ml example above is 1/3 of an ounce - or 2 teaspoons. Other exact percentages can be computed from the chart above. For example, .5% can be estimated based on the chart ratios: You would simply take 4 teaspoons of carrier oil (or 20 ml) and add 3 drops of essential oil. (these lower dilutions are useful for younger children) Oils higher in phenols (such as blends with cinnamon and clove in Josiah's Germ Fighting Blend) need to be significantly diluted - such as a 1% to 2% ratio. For specific ratios for our oils, please contact us directly! We are happy to help! Ninette Jackson, C.A. Josiah's Oils 8 Meadow Lane, Lancaster, PA (717) 824-3222 |
