One of the most frequent questions I receive is about using oils for PANDAS symptoms. Let me start by explaining that oils do not cure PANDAS but can help greatly with some of the most common symptoms based on my years working with clients: 1. Reducing exposure to pathogens. Oils like Germ Fighting Blend and Cleanse can greatly reduce a child's exposure to symptom stimuli by helping to eliminate pathogens both in the air and topically. Dilute according to your child's age for topical uses (soles of the feet 2-3 times daily) and diffuse in atomizing diffuser for 15 minutes to 20 minutes 2-3 times daily. Also use Germ Fighting Blend to make hand soaps and hand sanitizer to reduce exposures throughout the day! (recipe is on the bottle) 2. Anxiety/Stress/Tics/wakefulness/Inflammation: Oils that help calm the nervous system: Vetiver, Peace & Balance, ZZZ's (for sleep), Frankincense Carterii. Diffuse often in Atomizing Diffuser; Apply diluted to back of neck at brain stem (2-3 times daily); Place in personal inhaler to inhale as needed or at onset of symptoms like tics filled with vetiver and frankincense); FOCUS Blend may also assist with attention-type issues as well as tics). ***Diffuse Frankincense and Copaiba (50/50) for suspected inflammation in sessions of 15 minutes 2-3 times daily.*** (this can be very beneficial) 3. Yeast Overgrowth due to antibiotic use: (speak with your doctor about dosage) as well as Oregano oil diluted to .5% on soles of feet 2-3 times a day for 10 days. (*internal use must be used with caution with help from your doctor) Other things that help include higher amounts of Vitamin D (check with your doctor) 4. Repeated throat infections? Antibiotics are usually needed for strep. Many enjoy a gargle of a drop of sandalwood oil in 2-4 ounces of warm water daily to help avoid throat illnesses. This has been shown to be very helpful!!!! Many have asked me to share some recipes, so here you go - the first of a series! I use Josiah's Lemon Essential Oil in my Lemon Chicken recipe - it is simple and a big hit. Add 2 Tbs coconut oil to cast iron skillet; add 1 tsp pure butter; warm until melted on low; add 2 drops EO - keep on low and stir until combined; add 1 lb chicken breast and salt to taste. I cook this recipe slow and low until the chicken in cooked through and garnish the serving plate with lemon wedges. You can substitute Josiah's Orange Oil for orange chicken too! Serve over rice (you can heat the pre-cooked rice though in butter or coconut oil with a drop of lemon oil as well for lemon rice!) Ninette (Certified Clinical Aromatherapist at Josiah's Oils, Lancaster, PA) Due to indoor and outdoor pollution we all have considerably reduced negative ions in our homes, schools, and offices. (Negative ions are the good ones; sounds counter-intuitive, but it is true!) Simply adding negative ions to be added to the air improves air quality. Why are positive ions damaging? Positive ions result from pollutants including heating systems, air conditioners, smoke particles, electro-magnetic fields called EMFs (computers, cells phones, wireless internet...). Positive ions are known to make us feel tired, irritable, depressed, and even anxious. They are also thought to increase your chances of illness due to a weakened immune system. This is because overload of positive ions attacking our system creates free radicals in the body. An essential oil diffuser (especially an atomizing diffuser) will break down a essential oil into a very fine mist which travels through the air filling the atmosphere with negative ions. They also will neutralizing , bacteria, viruses, and fungus (Germ Fighting Blend works well for this), improving the air quality of your home. It will also clean the air of odor - not cover it with synthetic chemicals. The benefits continue as inhaled oils can help with congestion, and will increase mood. The molecular size of the oils allow them to travel directly to the brain. They can help with depression, focus, memory and more! (source http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25192562) Oils: marjoram, black pepper, lavender, and peppermint Jojoba Oil makes an excellent carrier oil for neck pain as it is anti-inflammatory as well! Some who are looking for more natural alternatives for pain relief should consider essential oils (after speaking to their doctor). Ninette Jackson Clinical Aromatherapist This will be a short blog post today! I want to remind or inform you all that ALL essential oils should be diluted for topical applications. Yes, even frankincense. Yes, even lavender. Why? Well for two main reasons: 1. Dilution lessons the risk of skin irritation and injury both immediately and over time (see picture); 2. Essential oils are volatile so they dissipate quickly. Instead of scenting the air, carriers help hold the oils so they can stay on or travel into the skin to give you maximum therapeutic benefit. Finally, fresher oils are less irritating. So be mindful of the age of you oils. For specific dilution ratios, we are here to help. All of your customers at Josiah's Oils have access to 2 Certified Aromatherapists to provide you with an exact dilution recipe for your oil. Good carrier oils include: Jojoba, Grapeseed, Almond, Argan, Fractionated Coconut, Pumpkin. From BioMed Central: Frankincense resin is obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia (family Burseraceae). Incisions are made in the trunks of the trees to produce exuded gum, which appears as milk like resin. The resin hardens into orange-brown gum resin known as frankincense. There are numerous species and varieties of frankincense trees, including Boswellia serrata . . . Boswellia carteri in East Africa ..., each producing a slightly different type of resin. Differences in soil and climate create more diversity in the resins, even within the same species. The aroma from these resins is valued for its presumed healing properties and superior qualities for religious rituals since the time of the ancient Egyptians [1], and has been used in incense, fumigants, and as a fixative in perfumes. Frankincense resin has been considered throughout the ages to have a wealth of health supporting properties. The resins of Boswellia carteri and Boswellia serrata have been used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases [2] such as Crohn's disease [3] in traditional medicine of many countries. The anti-inflammatory activity has been attribute to the resin's ability in regulating immune cytokines production [4] and leukocyte infiltration [5,6]. Boswellia serrata extract also exhibits anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities [7]. Additionally, extracts from Boswelliaspecies gum resins might possess anti-cancer activities, based on their anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic activities in rat astrocytoma cell lines [8] and in human leukemia cell lines [9], as well as their anti-carcinogenic activity in chemically induced mouse skin cancer models [10]. Clinically, extract from the resin reduces the peritumoral edema in glioblastoma patients [8] and reverses multiple brain metastases in a breast cancer patient [11]. These results suggest that frankincense resin contains active ingredients that modulate important biological activities. Ninette Certified Clinical Aromatherapist Josiah's Oils 8 Meadow Lane, Lancaster, PA www.josiahsoils.com I have been recently asked which "school" of aromatherapy we adhere to at Josiah's Oils. I thought I would write a little on the topic to clear things up a bit. The idea has been popular that "British" practices are quite conservative with regard to essential oils usage. That "thinking" would cause one to use skin patch testing and use dilution with a carrier oil before topical uses of essential oils. While (according to this idea) French aromatherapists on the other hand would advocate liberal internal uses of essential oils even without a medical consultation and neat (or undiluted) skin applications. (Yes, many who know me know I am saying "yikes" to that!) Now it is true I have seen both fear spreading and overreaching in on-line essential oils claims - which kind of summarizes these stereotypes. Some are so fearful that using essential oils becomes an anxiety filled experience, which is not good. At the end of the day, safe and practical aromatherapy is somewhere in the middle of the two approaches. Each and every person is different. Each and every essential oil is made up of different and unique constituents. There is no possible way to make broad statements about all essential oils in all situations. For example, I would never say, "do not take essential oils internally." But I would say, "never take Wintergreen Essential Oil internally." Why, most resources advise it is toxic taken internally in small doses. Thus, I can say with confidence: Don't take any toxic oils internally and get all of your essential oils usage advice from an experienced professional. A similar black and while issue arose with eucalyptus oil. Many claim it is completely unsafe for children under 6. However, there are too many variables to make a broad statement like that. How old is the child? Is it diluted? If so to what ratio? Where is it being applied? Is it being diffused? What type of diffuser and how much EO? How long are you diffusing? I hope you are getting the picture! Again, the help of an experienced professional is key. In conclusion, for all of the charts and memes on social media about using "essential oils" little are helpful because the issue is far too complicated for that. Aromatherapy is much more of a personal experience. Ninette Jackson, C.C.M.A. Sharon Cross, R.N. Josiah's Oils 8 Meadow Lane, Lancaster, PA www.josiahsoils.com
ESSENTIAL OILS DO NOT NEED TO COST AN ARM AND A LEG! Many who have been in the shop over the summer know how much I love Copaiba Oil. A recent study quoted by the National Insistent of Health demonstrated that one of the major components of the oil is a potent anti-inflammatory - one of the strongest anti-inflammatory essential oils; it is also gentle - well absorbed by almost all people. Gentle, reduces inflammation, well absorbed.....Thinking Hemorrhoids anyone??? Copaiba has also been used for generations as effective pain reliever and wound healer too. I keep it in my purse at all times. This oil is a perfect example of my favorite lesson: Oils need NOT be expensive to be powerful. At $10 a bottle this packs a punch!!! BACK TO LICE? NOT WITH TEA TREE OIL! Back-To-School & Ultra-Resistant Lice is in the news.....resistant to conventional treatment that is. According to the Today show, "head lice, long the bane of parents and kids across the country, are becoming a much worse problem: Strains of the pesky parasites that are resistant to most over-the-counter treatments have now been found in at least 25 states." (http://www.today.com/health/super-strains-lice-spread-25-states-new-report-finds-t37631) Essential Oils yet again might be the answer! One study by the NIH showed tea tree oil was effective against head lice with 100 % mortality at 30 min and 1 % concentration. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22847279) KEEP YOUR COOL! Did you know that you can extend the shelf life of your EOs by up to 5 years just by keeping them refrigerated? Many oils, like citrus, tea tree, and lavender oxidize quickly and do not last more than a year if kept in home closets. Simply put them in a Tupperware-style container and pop them in the fridge to keep them fresh and extend their usefulness! At Josiah's Oils, we cold-store your oils from receipt from the distiller, so they are as fresh as possible the minute you get them. No sitting on shelves or in a storage room as they would degrade and not be a fresh as possible for your family! MORE ESSENTIAL OILS CLASSES COMING SOON!
