Origin of Modern Essential Oil Use
The term aromatherapy was coined by the French chemist and perfumer Rene-Maurice Gattefosse. In 1910, he burnt his hand badly in his laboratory and treated it with pure undiluted lavender oil, which he had on hand in his cosmetic company. Lavender not only immediately eased the pain, but it also helped heal the hand without any sign of infection or scarring. This "discovery" lead to his experimenting with essential oils to heal soldiers at military hospitals using lavender, thyme, clove and lemon oils.
