Neem oil, derived from the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), is a potent natural insect repellent. Its active compound, azadirachtin, disrupts insect feeding and reproduction. A 2015 study in Parasitology Research found neem oil repelled mosquitoes (e.g., Aedes aegypti) by 70-90% for 4-6 hours when applied topically. It’s also effective against ticks, flies, and agricultural pests, with a 2018 Journal of Economic Entomology study showing 80% repellency against house flies. Neem oil’s strong odor enhances its efficacy.
