![]() Cinnamon essential oil has many powerful properties and may even increase survival rates from the flu, but be sure you know your are getting true cinnamon, not cassia. The dangers of Cassia may shock you! True Cinnamon is proven to be an:
There are mainly four types of cinnamon: • True cinnamon or Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) • Indonesian cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanni) • Vietnamese cinnamon (Cinnamomum loureiroi) • Cassia cinnamon or Chinese cinnamon (Cinnamomum aromaticum). Many companies use Cassia (calling it cinnamon) in their blends. However, “According to the European Food safe authority, cassia cinnamon has been the cause of exposure to [higher amounts of ] coumarin which is highly hepatotoxic and carcinogenic.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4466762/ “Cassia cinnamon contains ... 1% coumarin, whereas true cinnamon Cinnamomum zeylanicum contains only a trace, about 0.004%. Due to the high cost of true cinnamon, cassia cinnamon is often used.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3385612/ Therefore we use Cinnamomum zeylanicum in our Germ Fighting Blend. Its antimicrobial power is well documented: “The cinnamaldehyde component of cinnamon is responsible for its anti-microbial activity. It can inhibit the growth of Listeria and Escherichia coli in food products thereby potentiating their shelf life…[Cinnamon] it is said to inhibit protein synthesis which is responsible for is ability to improve survival in mice following infection with influenza A/PR/8 virus.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4466762/#ref26 “Inhalation … of [trans-cinnamaldehyde (CA), one of the principal constituents of essential oil] significantly increased survival rates on the 8 days to 100% and 70%, respectively, in contrast to a survival rate of 20% in the untreated control group.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17303260/ In addition, true cinnamon is known to improve cognitive function. Cinnamomum zeylanicum also has promise in limiting the Alzheimer induced changes in the brain and improve recognition. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4466762/ So when you diffuse, be sure to diffuse the correct cinnamon to get the safest benefits for your family this winter. Its the time of year when we are spending more time indoors, and perhaps even thinking of making personalized Christmas gifts. So I am sharing a few fun, new recipes for a DIY Roller Bottle. The steps are simple:
First, you will need empty Roller Bottles. You also may use Aroma Inhalers and omit the carrier oil and only add the essential oils listed to your salt! Enjoy some time playing with these recipe ideas to make them your "own". Another idea is to make roller blends with a friend as out nose loses sensitivity to your blends when working with them over time. Always remember to write your unique blends down so you don't forget them next time. Next, you need carrier oil and essential oils. If you ever get UNDILUTED essential oils on the skin, wash it off with a carrier, or fatty, oil, like coconut oil. So now we have the basics; get some hot tea and a friend and HAPPY BLENDING! Cinnamon Spice A Time for Love
Peace "Fragrance" - great scent from men too! To make more floral, alternate Lavender for Cedarwood.
Simple, but Heavenly
Please share your experience with these blends! I'd love to hear from you. Detoxification is “the metabolic process by which toxins are changed into less toxic or more readily excitable substances.” Your body was designed by God to naturally remove toxins. Unfortunately, our toxic overload is only increasing. Polluted air, dangerous bath and body products, the water supply, food additives and pesticides are only a few we are commonly exposed to. In the specialty of essential oils, I have seen powerful body function assistance with using the correct oil in the correct way. Looking closely we see that some oils can assist the body's natural elimination process or excreting undesirable substances along by stimulation things like the lymphatic system, lungs, and liver. Your body naturally excretes things like mucus to release toxic matter. Therefore expectorant oil like eucalyptus assist the body's detoxification process. Other examples of our body's natural defenses include the lymphatic system which naturally acts to clean the tissue of toxins and the liver function which detoxify the body. There are quite a few oils exceptionally high in antioxidants which will naturally assist the body's function. One such oil is May Chang, which contains over 65% citral! Another example is Lemongrass, which contains over 75% citral - an extraordinary oil constituent to assist the body's natural detoxification process. You may simply add Add 4-6 drops of two citral-rich oils in your diffuser daily! TIP - Adding a few drops of Peppermint helps enhance the antioxidant dosage and creates an excellent odor killing scent as well! You may also dilute an oil like May Chang in Golden Jojoba Oil and apply to your lymph nodes to assist natural detoxification. An excellent blend to cleanse the body and support the immune system is the Immune Boost Blend, which aslo contains pwerful anti-inflammatories to help reduce lymphatic congestion. (Always speak with your doctor first if you are under treatment) Oils in the Immune Boost assist the body in the following ways: Studies have demonstrated that frankincense has immune-enhancing abilities that may help the bodies abilities to destroy bacteria and viruses. It can even be used to prevent germs from forming on the skin. Palmarosa has been studied to be an agent against both gram negative and gram positive bacteria (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2839398/) Lemon oil is high vitamin content, making it valuable for the body’s immune system. It further stimulates white blood cells, thus increasing your ability to fight off diseases. Lemon oil also improves circulation throughout the body! Next, Copaiba is a strong antibacterial that can act as a major booster for your immune system. It can act as a shield for your skin, protecting any wounds from developing an infection. It also protects you by eliminating harmful bacteria and viruses and by reducing inflammation throughout the body. Finally, lavender essential oil is a natural antioxidant that works to prevent and reverse disease. A 2013 study published in Phytomedicine stated that lavender oil increased the activity of the body’s most powerful antioxidants — glutathione, catalase, and SOD. Recent studies have indicated similar results, concluding that lavender has antioxidant activity and helps to prevent or reverse oxidative stress. **** A side note, redness and irritation is NEVER a sign of detoxification from an essential oil. If an oil irritates the skin, stop using it and seek medical help if necessary. Ninette Jackson Clinical Aromatherapist Josiah's Oils 8 Meadow Lane, Lancaster www.josiahsoils.com ![]() Summer is nearly here, and so are the mosquitos. According to the CDC: West Nile virus (WNV) is most commonly transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. You can reduce your risk of being infected with WNV by using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing to prevent mosquito bites. There are no medications to treat or vaccines to prevent WNV infection. Fortunately, most people infected with WNV will have no symptoms. About 1 in 5 people who are infected will develop a fever with other symptoms. Less than 1% of infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, neurologic illness. An important study, conducted by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, tested a mix of lemon eucalyptus essential oil other natural repellents and to DEET. Two of the natural repellents, (1) was made from the Neem tree and (2) another from a mix of other oils, were found to be ineffective. A 15 percent DEET compound performed better, providing about 85 percent protection from bites. Most importantly, the lemon eucalyptus oil was the BEST repellent of ALL tested! the Lemon Eucalyptus Oils provided 97% protection over four hours. Why Lemon eucalyptus oil??? This oil works so well because its main naturally occurring constituent p-menthane-3,8-diol or sometimes called PMD, blocks mosquitoes the ability to sense human presence. The oil masks or covers otherwise attracting signals like carbon dioxide and lactic acid. This is GREAT news for those looking for a less toxic alternative to DEET. Lemon Eucalyptus can be irritating to the skin so be sure you are diluting properly before use! Enjoy your summer! According to the Mayo Clinic: "A migraine can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually on just one side of the head. It's often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.Migraine attacks can cause significant pain for hours to days and can be so severe that the pain is disabling. Warning symptoms known as aura may occur before or with the headache. These can include flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling on one side of the face or in your arm or leg." For those of us who have experienced migraines, we know that can be life altering, debilitating, removing us from time with friends and family. I am so thankful to report that essential oils can in fact help! Nerve stimulation appears to start in the brainstem and travel to your face, teeth, eyes, sinuses, and forehead. When specific essential oils are applied to that area both topically early in a migraine, symptoms can be greatly alleviated. Nerve stimulation travels to the blood vessels on the surface of the brain likely dilating blood vessels. OUCH! So how do oils help? 1. Helichrysum is one of the strongest anti-inflammatory AND best absorbed oils known, causing many time immediate relief on-site. Clinical studies have concluded that the anti-inflammatory activity of Helichrysum italicum can be explained by multiple effects, including inflammatory enzyme inhibition, free-radical scavenging activity and corticoid-like effects. 2. Similarly, Peppermint essential oil has strong analgesic (pain relieving), anesthetic, as well as anti-inflammatory properties, which provide relief for pain (especially migraines). Peppermint oil also helps with migraine induced nausea. 2012 study out of Clayton State University that tested peppermint oils ability to reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting. The studied showed that peppermint essential oil was not only quite effective in reducing post-operative nausea and vomiting, it “significantly lowered” the sickness levels of participants compared to women who received standard anti-nausea medications. 3. Finally, Lavender is well known to reduce the stress and axienty that often accompanies migraines. But it doesn't stop there. lavender is also an effective analgesic as well; its high linalool content also helps all of the oils combined with it to penetrate more deeply into the tissue on which is has been allied. My recommendation, therefore, is to apply these oils together (diluted) two ways: 1. at the brain stem area at the earliest on set of pain, and 2. topically where the head hurts the most (avoiding eyes). Based on my research and experience, I have personally created a Migraine Relief Blend with these oils proportioned accurately and pre-diluted in anti-inflammatory jojoba oil at a safe ratio for ease of use. We also offer a Headache Relief Blend with a lessor concentration of these same oils. M. Heffernan, 2011 I love this quote. It speaks to so many areas in life, but important to me it speaks to many people's attempts to "sell" essential oils without proper training. Many people are not knowingly harming anyone, but essential oils are different from, say Tupperware - while many are selling both in pyramid structured marketing schemes, Tupperware is not deadly if misused. Sound like an exaggeration? Let me explain myself. Just because essential oils are natural (should be 100% pure), doesn't mean there aren't issues with toxicity and contradictions to medical conditions or medications. Personally, as a Clinical Aromatherapist, I need to be aware of potential side effects, medication contradictions, and toxicity issues. This includes skin, irritants, allergies, phytotoxic effects, and inhaled toxicity as well. Such considerations are greatly based on concentrations used and frequency of usage based on the oil selected. Oils are extremely complex compounds, thus Memes and Pinterest Posts provide little in the way of true educational support. For this reason, in 2016 we have started offering FREE classes on safe essential oil usage at least once per month at the shop in Lancaster. In addition, since 2012, we have offered essential oils safety classes at libraries, hospitals, nursing homes and other settings. Safety is such an important aspect of what we do and why we do it.
